Quincy School Committee to Decide on Lunar New Year Holiday Recognition

The Quincy School Committee will convene on Wednesday evening, April 10 6:30 pm, to make a highly anticipated decision on including Lunar New Year as an official school holiday for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. The meeting, which will be held at the school administration building on Coddington Street, is expected to draw a large crowd of students, parents, and community members who have been advocating for the change.

Quincy, home to the state's second-largest Asian population, has been grappling with recognizing the most important holiday for its largest ethnic group. The Lunar New Year, widely celebrated by Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and other Asian communities worldwide, is a time for families to come together, usher in good luck, and celebrate their cultural heritage.

The vote on Wednesday night will be preceded by an open forum, during which community members can voice their opinions and share their experiences. Many are expected to attend, just as they did last year when the school committee ultimately rejected the proposal to include Lunar New Year as a school holiday.

Quincy to Launch Community Electricity Program for Greener, Cheaper Energy

Quincy is set to launch Quincy Community Electricity in June 2024, joining other Massachusetts cities in offering more sustainable and cost-effective energy options. The program, which includes three plans varying in price and renewable energy content, aims to lower electricity costs and support local renewable sources. Enrollment is automatic for eligible National Grid customers, but the program is voluntary, with options to opt out or select a different plan. With fixed prices until December 2027, the program offers Quincy residents and businesses a promising opportunity for savings and participation in green energy growth. Full announcement here

Dainty Scripts' Summer Workshop: Where Quincy's Young Artists Shine

Dainty Scripts, a new art studio in Quincy, is excited to announce its upcoming Young Artists Workshop. The workshop is designed to nurture and empower the artistic talents of children aged 8 to 14. It will run for three weeks in July, with sessions held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The Young Artists Workshop will be hosted at the First Church of Squantum's Recreational Hall, 164 Bellevue Rd, Quincy, MA 02171. Parents can sign their children up for one, two, or all three weeks. Each week's fee, which includes all materials, is $375.

Three highly skilled and licensed teachers—Maura Gorman, the owner of Dainty Scripts, Catherine Healy, and Caroline Keenan—are leading the workshop. Together, they have crafted a diverse and engaging curriculum that will allow young artists to explore various artistic techniques and mediums.

Participants will create their own custom charcuterie board inspired by Dainty Scripts, learning the tricks and secrets behind the artist's unique style. They will also engage in directed step-by-step canvas painting, similar to a paint party, and collaborate on a mural that radiates happiness and positivity. The mural project will serve as a great team-building experience, and Dainty Scripts will reach out to public spaces to have the artwork displayed, sharing the love and creativity with the local community.

The Young Artists Workshop aims to build artistic confidence and unleash creativity in each participant. The workshop will empower children to explore their artistic talents and develop new skills by providing a supportive and nurturing environment.

Spots are limited for each week, so interested parents are encouraged to register their children as soon as possible. If a child wishes to attend multiple weeks, they can create new projects and learn new techniques each week.

To register for the Dainty Scripts Young Artists Workshop, please visit daintyscripts.com. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to foster your child's love for art and creativity under the guidance of experienced and passionate teachers.
