City of Quincy Issues First Blockchain-Based Municipal Bond in the U.S.
The City of Quincy, Massachusetts, has made history by issuing the first blockchain-based municipal bond in the United States. The $10 million tax-exempt bond, facilitated by J.P. Morgan, demonstrates Quincy's commitment to leveraging emerging technologies for financial inclusion and economic growth. The move is expected to pave the way for lower transaction costs, enhanced liquidity, and reduced settlement times in the municipal bond market.
Quincy City Council President Ian Cain praised the city for making history and positioning itself as a global hub for public service and financial innovation. The city has supported the distributed ledger technology (DLT) landscape, sponsoring Boston Blockchain Week and partnering with Blockchain R&D initiatives at QUBIC Labs.
Mayor Koch expressed his vision for the future: "I look forward to the day when Quincy residents can buy bonds to fund projects in Quincy that directly impact and improve their quality of life." Full Story
Quincy Councillors Propose Ordinance to Recognize Lunar New Year as Legal Holiday
Five Quincy city councilors have proposed an ordinance recognizing Lunar New Year as a legal holiday. The ordinance highlights the significant AAPI population in Quincy and the importance of observing the holiday. If passed, the ordinance would lead to the closure of municipal offices on Lunar New Year. The proposal comes shortly after the Quincy School Committee approved a 2024-25 academic year calendar that keeps schools open on the holiday.
