Adams National Historical Park Hosts Independence Day Events on July 4

Adams National Historical Park in Quincy, Massachusetts, is set to honor Independence Day with a series of engaging events on July 4, 2024. The National Park Service invites the public to participate in readings of the Declaration of Independence and enjoy a theatrical performance highlighting the correspondence between John Adams, Abigail Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.

The celebrations begin at the Adams Farm on Penn's Hill, home to the birthplaces of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. At 10 am and 12 noon, visitors can join in public readings of the Declaration of Independence. Michael Lepage, portraying John Adams, will lead the readings, encouraging attendees to lend their voices to this historic document. The outdoor event will also feature patriotic musical performances by baritone Larry Gall and The Conchords.

Later in the day, the United First Parish Church will host a performance of "Jefferson & Adams: A Stage Play" by Howard Ginsberg. Starting at 2 pm, this compelling dramatization brings to life the complex, enduring friendship between John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Abigail Adams. Actors Bill Barker, Sam Goodyear, and Abigail Schumann will portray the historical figures, exploring their correspondence over a fifty-year period.

Both events are free to the public and require no registration. The park offers free, validated parking at the Adams National Historical Park Visitor Center through the Presidents Place parking garage. A complimentary trolley service connects the Visitor Center, Adams Farm at Penn's Hill, and the Old House at Peace field.

Quincy Neighborhoods Celebrate Independence Day with Patriotic Parades

Two of Quincy's vibrant neighborhoods, Merrymount and Squantum, are set to mark Independence Day with their annual parades. Each offers a unique celebration of American pride and community spirit.

In Merrymount, the 4th of July Parade will depart at 12:30 p.m. from Merrymount Elementary School. This year's event is significant as it commemorates the Merrymount Association's centennial anniversary. To honor this milestone, the parade will feature a nostalgic "Back to the 20s" theme, inviting participants to transport spectators to the era of the association's founding. The procession will wind through the neighborhood, concluding at the scenic Merrymount Beach by 1:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Squantum will begin its Fourth of July celebrations bright and early. At 9 a.m., community members will gather at the cannon at the Nickerson American Legion Post for a flag-raising ceremony. Playing the national anthem will set a patriotic tone for the day's festivities. The Squantum parade will then commence at 10 a.m., bringing together residents in a display of national pride and neighborhood unity.
