Eastern Nazarene College to Cut 125 Jobs Amid Campus Closure
Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy will cut 125 jobs between August 2024 and spring 2025 as it prepares to close its Wollaston campus due to financial difficulties. JP Fuji Group Introduces Niveaux Pâtisserie to North Quincy
Niveaux Pâtisserie, a French patisserie by JP Fuji Group, is set to open in North Quincy at 406 Hancock Street within YoCha in the summer of 2024. The patisserie promises a blend of Parisian elegance and local charm, offering artisanal French pastries. YoCha will be closed for remodeling from July 8th to July 11th, reopening July 12th.
Quincy Residents Fight Against Mayor's Salary Hike
On June 3rd, the Quincy City Council approved a substantial salary increase for Mayor Thomas Koch, raising his annual pay from $159,000 to $285,000. Additionally, councilors' salaries will increase from $29,700 to $43,500. The raise aims to make the mayoral position more competitive and attract diverse candidates, but it has sparked debate about its necessity and timing.
This decision follows a recommendation by a city-hired consultant, who suggested a salary of up to $370,000 based on a national survey of chief administrative officers. This marks Koch's second raise in his 16-year tenure and his first since 2014.
To challenge the raises, the advocacy group "A Just Quincy" seeks to suspend the raises by forcing the city council to reconsider. Citing Chapter 43, Section 42 of state law, they must collect signatures from 12% of registered Quincy voters on two separate petitions—one for the mayor and another for the councilors—by July 10 by noon. If successful, the raises, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2025, will be put to a public vote. Without these petitions, Mayor Koch’s salary will automatically increase.
Mayor Kock talks about his salary on the City View Podcast here.
