Firefighters Battle Three-Alarm Blaze,
How to Help the Family

A devastating three-alarm fire severely damaged a Victorian home at 301 Belmont Street in Wollaston on the afternoon of September 12, displacing a family of eight. Quincy firefighters responded to the blaze around 2:30 p.m., confronting flames and heavy smoke pouring from the single-family residence. Crews spent about three hours battling the fire, which left the house, originally built in 1880, likely a total loss.

The family, including their dog, escaped safely, though one firefighter may have sustained a minor ankle injury. Fire Chief Joseph Jackson praised his team for their diligent work controlling the fire, which had spread into the house's multiple ceilings.

In response to the tragedy, Quincy Catholic Academy has rallied to support the displaced family whose children attend the school. The Academy is organizing a donation drive, accepting monetary contributions and gift cards to help the family rebuild after the loss of their home. You can donate through Venmo @quincycatholicacademy. Please be sure to put “Family Fire Fund” as the notation.

Quincy Receives $4.2 Million Grant to Modernize Squantum Point Park Ferry Pier

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has announced nearly $300 million in grants, funded through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to improve ferry systems nationwide. These grants are intended to modernize and expand ferry services, which serve as essential transportation for millions of Americans.

One of the recipients is the city of Quincy, MA, which, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), has been awarded $4.2 million to upgrade the Squantum Point Park Ferry Pier. The project includes the construction of a new pier, float, and ramp system, aiming to strengthen regional maritime transportation. This modernization will connect Quincy to Boston and neighboring communities such as Milton, Weymouth, and Braintree, improving access to employment, healthcare, and other services in downtown Boston.
